Post Redeemer Reads Page Proof

Had a lovely first reading from Milksop this afternoon at Redeemer University. Thank you, everyone who attended, for your questions and encouraging responses! Then when I got home, what was waiting for me? The page proofs of Milksop for one more edit and proofread. Pre-ordering begins widely April 23, one month ahead of publication, though you can already pre-order at my publisher’s website.

Red Carpet Event for Milksop!

Not! More likely a snow carpet event, given the date.

Announcing the world premiere of Milksop! The novel, that is, not the movie, nor the Netflix miniseries, board game, or superhero action figures, which are all still in the development stage. (For the lead roles in Milksop: The Musical, we’re in talks with Harry Styles and Taylor Swift.)

Actually, the novel is also still in development, scheduled to be published by Chicken House Press this spring. (Can the season and the novel come soon enough?) To give you a taste of Evan Mulder’s coming-of-age story, I’ll be returning to the scene of my many academic crimes at Redeemer University on February 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the library. After the reading, you’ll have a chance to sign up for U-MAW: the United Milksops Association of the World.

If none of this entices you, I believe there will be some beverages and treats, though due to budget constraints your glass may be half empty and your nibbly may already have a bite out of it.

If you can’t make it in person, you would be more than welcome to attend via Zoom.

I would love to see you there! Details and directions available through this link.

Sabbatical Colloquium Delivered

On January 15, 2024, I gave my sabbatical colloquium–a fancy word for a talk, in this case, an account of what I did during my sabbatical vacation. With my title “What the Fool Says,” maybe you get the picture. Aside from discussing the reading and writing I did, and how that connected with my overall interest in the nature, mode, and techniques of comedy and humour, I offered an update on my second collection of Mulder stories, The Healing Arts, which I’ve been revising under the mentorship of Joseph Kertes from the Humber School for Writers. I also shared that I finished drafting and am currently revising my first novel, tentatively titled Milksop, which is Evan Mulder’s coming-of-age story, a novel I drafted through working with The Novelry. And lastly, I read one of the stories I wrote on my sabbatical, “Lickety-Split.” Thanks again to the support of the Canada Council for the Arts! If you’re interested in my talk, it was recorded on zoom: I’d be happy to share it with you.

Book Club zoomers

On April 20, 2023, I’m joining a book club in East Lansing, Michigan–at least via Zoom–to talk about the particular brand of moonshine found in my stories. I hope the group found my tales intoxicating. Thanks to my good friend Suzette Vos for organizing this!

Celebrating Redeemer’s 40th with Moonshine

I will be reading from Moonshine Promises and signing copies at 21 Five, the Redeemer Bookstore (777 Garner Road East, Ancaster, Ontario), as part of Redeemer University’s 40th anniversary celebrations on October 1, at 3:30 pm.

I am excited and honored to share the stage for this reading with fellow authors Amber Kuipers, author of When Grey Came Stay, and Brent van Staalduinen, author most recently of Cut Road: Stories.

Peddling Moonshine at Chapters Indigo

During September I have two book promo and signing events at Chapters Indigo stores!

The first is on September 18th at the Ancaster Chapters from 11 AM to 2 PM. (Meadowland Regional Centre, 737 Golf Links Road, Unit 1, Ancaster, Ontario)

The second is on September 24th at the London North Indigo from noon to 5 PM. (Richmond Centre, 86 Fanshawe, London, Ontario)

Please stop by and say hello if you’re in the neighbourhood!

First Book Club Invite

I’ve been invited by Hilda Roukema to visit her book club to discuss Moonshine Promises. I’m excited to meet these readers on February 18th, 2022.

First Reading from Moonshine Promises

On October 7th I will be visiting Linda Booy-Korvemaker’s Grade 12U English class at Smithville Christian High School to share a reading from Moonshine Promises and reply to students’ curious queries.
